CPEU Course Description

Protein supplementation during resistance exercise training augments hypertrophic gains and protein quality has an impact on changes in muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and could ultimately affect skeletal muscle mass.  This CPEU course examines the effects of protein quality in supplementation on changes in muscle mass and strength as well as body composition during resistance training.

Brooke H. Dekofsky, MPH, RD, CLE, CDE was involved in the creation of this course.

Article Author:  Stuart Phillips, Ph.D.

Exam writer: Tiev LaGuire, M.S.

CPEU Course Objectives

1.  Analyze the strongest determinant of the capacity of a protein to affect MPS and likely hypertrophy.

2.  Conclude which amino acid turns on muscle protein synthesis.

3.  Explain why collagen’s protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score is zero.

4.  Identify when protein consumption has been shown to be effective at stimulating MPS and is thus the recommended time of consumption.

5.  Name three influences on muscle hypertrophy following resistance training.
