Food allergy is an important public health problem because it affects children and adults, can be severe and even life-threatening, and may be increasing in prevalence.  This CPEU course reviews the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ addendum guidelines to specifically address the prevention of peanut allergy.

CPEU Course Objectives

  1. Explain what is responsible for the greater frequency of clinical peanut allergy and hence the increased prevalence in children.
  2. Investigate the observation that was associated with the prevalence of peanut allergy being tenfold higher among Jewish children in the United Kingdom compared with Israeli children of similar ancestry.
  3. Elucidate the age at which peanut butter directly from a spoon or in lumps / dollops should not be given.
  4. Identify the infants that are at high risk for the development of peanut allergy.
  5. Provide instructions for home feeding of peanut protein for infants at low risk of an allergic reaction to peanut.
