CPEU Course Description

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) separates the central nervous system (CNS) from the peripheral tissues.  In order to maintain homeostasis in the CNS, the BBB controls material, nutrients, and cell transfer from the blood to the brain and from the brain to the blood.  This CPEU course discusses the crosstalk between physical exercise and BBB permeability.

Haley Barnes, RD, CDE was involved in the creation of this course.

Article Author:  Pawel Winklewski, M.D., Ph.D., et al.

Exam writer: Tiev LaGuire, M.S.

CPEU Course Objectives

1.  Conclude how brain and peripheral inflammatory states promote BBB failure and through the catabolism of which amino acid this occurs.

2.  Describe how exercise alleviates the inflammatory state in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

3.  Identify the main structures responsible for the barrier properties of the BBB.

4.  Interpret how exercise protects from inflammation-induced neurodegenerative synaptic and dendritic alterations.

5.  Name five cell types that make up the BBB.

6.  Summarize the purpose of the blood-brain barrier.
