CPEU Course Description

This CPEU course examines the relationship among: biomarkers of iron status, athletic performance, growth and development, and dietary intakes; daily consumption of heme, non-heme, total iron, and red meat with the occurrence of metabolic syndrome; and iron-related dietary patters and cognitive function.

CPEU Course Objectives

  1. Conclude the association between red meat intake and metabolic syndrome.
  2. Determine which biomarker’s elevation is characteristic of metabolic syndrome.
  3. Explain how iron overload changes glucose metabolism.
  4. Evaluate how iron chelation is related to Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
  5. Identify which biomarker is related to improvements in skeletal muscle strength following dietary iron supplementation in adult female athletes.
  6. Name three foods that are positively associated with global cognition and three foods that are inversely associated with global cognition.
