CPEU Course Description

This CPEU course provides dietitians and nutritionalists working with the HIV-infected population information on the evaluation of patients with nutritional deficiencies, particularly weight loss, and on simple strategies for maintaining good nutrition in individuals with barriers to maintaining adequate weight.  Also discussed are occupational and nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis, preventing HIV transmission, immunizations for HIV-infected adults and adolescents, preventing exposure to opportunistic and other infections, opportunistic infection prophylaxis, latent tuberculosis infection, and smoking cessation.

  1. Explain when interventions for changes in weight should be considered.
  2. Investigate which test result is a measure of cellular integrity, an independent indicator of morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected patients.
  3. Examine which weight should be used to assess for changes over time.
  4. Identify when nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis is and is not appropriate.
  5. Provide the laboratory tests that should be performed at baseline before treatment with ARV medication.
  6. Describe what a patient should do if they are experiencing a loss of appetite.
