CPEU Course Description

There is increasing evidence that folate, an important component of one-carbon metabolism, modulates the epigenome.  Alcohol, which can disrupt folate absorption, is also known to affect the epigenome.  This CPEU course investigates the association of dietary folate and alcohol intake on leukocyte DNA methylation levels.

CPEU Course Objectives

1.  Analyze the genes and diseases for which alcohol consumption was positively and inversely associated with methylation.

2.  Describe the characteristics of DNA methylation.

3.  Illustrate how ethanol metabolism generates toxins that may directly lead to one-carbon metabolism dysfunction.

4.  Summarize how dietary folate has an influence with the Rho signal transduction pathway and the three forms of associated cancer.
