CPEU Course Description

Orlistat is a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor and thus reduces the extent of fat absorption from the diet.  This CPEU course evaluates if supplementation with flaxseed fibers and/or dairy calcium will alleviate the gastrointestinal symptoms related to orlistat treatment.  Furthermore, the effects of dietary supplementation in conjunction with orlistat on fecal parameters, dietary intake, anthropometry, cardiometabolic risk markers, and adverse events were evaluated.

Brooke H. Dekofsky, MPH, RD, CLE, CDE was involved in the creation of this course.

CPEU Course Objectives

  1. Compare dairy calcium to supplemental calcium with regard to fecal fat excretion and postprandial chylomicron triacylglycerol concentration.
  2. Estimate how well orlistat inhibits absorption of dietary fat.
  3. Identify how many grams per day higher the fecal fat excretion was with flaxseed fiber and calcium compared to fat excretion with orlistat alone.
  4. Summarize the effect flaxseed fiber supplementation had on diastolic blood pressure and hsCRP.
